Candidates need to stop and consider what they are doing each time they press the “Apply Now” button on a job board. Internet job boards allow for multiple applications in a matter of minutes that will increase your chances of finding the perfect job.

Getting an interview for the perfect job though requires more effort than firing off 50 resumes.

The resume document is your sales brochure and needs to be tailored to each role you target, particularly if you are seeking a broad variety of roles.

To help illustrate the point I will give you an example about a recently unemployed accountant who was looking for work in accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial accounting.

He may well have had experience in all of these areas but having a one size fits all approach to his resume only served to dilute his key skills, which will in turn diluted his chances of success.

Resume strategy

Sitting with an employer last week, they mentioned few hundreds applicants responded to a customer service role listed on a major internet job board. The client had only one person on staff to go through this massive response and pre-screening resumes was not that person’s prime responsibility. So, what’s your plan for how you will get your resume picked out of the pile of hundreds applications? Here is mine:

In order for your resume to be noticed amongst all of the other hopefuls, you need to quickly demonstrate relevance. The person culling the resumes will be looking for reasons to cut down the number of possible candidates in a first cull.

Think of yourself as a product and your resume as your brochure. You have the advantage of knowing the exact requirements of your target market as the key criteria are normally listed in the job advertisement.
Use the same or similar words to those used in the advertisement. This will create a link in the mind of the person reviewing with your application.

Keep your resume brief and to the point. Delete the old irrelevant information.
